Behaviour in heat: the SmartKnob's thermal management

Updated 9 October 2026SmartKnob

The SmartKnob is designed for safe continuous operation up to +65°C interior temperature and automatically switches to a gentle mode at higher temperatures instead of overloading itself.

What happens in heat

If the camper is standing in full sun in high summer and the interior heats up beyond this range, the SmartKnob automatically reduces functions that generate heat:

  1. The USB-C charging power is reduced or temporarily suspended.
  2. LEDs and haptic feedback are reduced or deactivated.
  3. Computing-intensive background tasks are postponed.

The display lets you know as soon as this mode is active. You can keep operating it throughout, only power-hungry functions rest for a short while. As soon as the interior temperature falls below the critical range again, the SmartKnob automatically returns to normal operation.

Practical tip: if your camper will be standing in blazing sun for a long time, provide ventilation or shade the body. This not only protects the SmartKnob, but also everything else inside such as food, batteries, wood and fabrics.
